CHAPTER 47

Joao Bebarash reached Sanchez on his mobile phone to inform him about what Jackson was driving—if he hadn’t dumped the rental car along the way.

Roberto Sanchez was confident he now knew everything the police in Brazil knew about Lonnie Jackson—and probably more. Mr. Bebarash’s bank contacts had learned that Jackson had to present a credit card when he rented a Lexus in Miami just hours after the cruise liner docked there. Once they knew what name Jackson traveled under, they checked with the credit card companies to see if anyone using the Hector Simental name had charged anything. They got a positive hit on the card and contacted the car rental company.

Sanchez still couldn’t be sure Jackson was headed to New Mexico. There had been no charges on the Simental card since Miami.

He looked through the sniper scope at the Curtis property and saw no vehicles parked outside the house. In fact, the only cars he’d seen since he entered the subdivision were a wreck he passed on the side of the road and a Sandoval County Sheriff’s SUV that was briefly at the Curtis home.

Sanchez felt good about the spot he’d selected. He had the high ground and a perfect view of the house. It was dark, but cloudless. Visibility was good. It would be easy to detect anyone who moved into or out of the house. The RAPTOR night-vision sight would give him an added advantage. Sanchez didn’t know when or if Jackson would show up here. But if Mr. Bebarash wanted him to sit here for the rest of his life, then that’s exactly what he would do. He thought, As long as I don’t freeze to death in the meantime. He shivered and hugged himself. I’m not used to this kind of weather.
